2008 PROGRAM

Virginia STARTALK Chinese Teacher Academy (VSCTA) has contributed a crucial component to the Virginia STARTALK Chinese Academy (VSCA) proposed by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and conducted at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond. The primary goal of this three-week residential program is to help novice and continuing Chinese language teachers gain confidence and enhance their expertise in teaching Chinese as a foreign language as they progress toward Chinese teacher certification or other kinds of professional development. It aims to integrate both theories and practice into the curriculum through a well-structured and sequenced supervised practicum based on a multi-reflective approach. Upon completion of the three-credit graduate course, teachers are able to keep abreast of new developments in second language acquisition theories and practice in general and Chinese language acquisition and pedagogy in particular. Participants are expected to create standards-based curricula and materials, deliver effective instruction, and implement authentic performance-based assessment and instructional technology in a learner-centered, highly communicative and interactive environment conducive to productive learning. Cultural and extracurricular activities are integral to the academic rigor of the program. The completion of an E-portfolio that documents their extensive learning experiences in launching or advancing their careers serves as the capstone in the development of participants’ competence in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
